The Free Design

The first truly springtime Sunday. All daffodils and crocuses, crisp air and warming sun. Hardly a car on the streets. Perhaps the old town is having a long lie in. This morning my arms are still covered with paint. I have this large job painting the inside of a house over on Morrison and I like the somewhat meditative stillness of painting walls and ceilings. In the mornings I burn a mix of tunes that I haven’t heard for awhile or bring music that I either want to internalize or break through the membrane of. It’s nice being alone in a big house with your tasks all organized before you.
Tonight is a big one. It's huge actually. I’m going to see Stereolab. Stereolab ranks third on the all time list of bands that I am truly excited about seeing for the first time. New Model Army and the Levellers ranked (at times interchangeably) just before, but Stereolab was always lurking just around the edges. The band is at the Wonder Ballroom tonight and Jeff Rosenberg has us on the guest list. Screw the Oscars; I'm going to get my soul patched up in the church of the healing arts. Music, tone bursts, oscillons. Trippy harmonium laden plateaus, and post WW2 lounge-sound vistas. The tangy smell of vodka and European cigarettes. Quirky vintage synth lines and lyrics sung in French. The space ship of the healing arts. The Wonder ballroom.

Off for more painting though just now.
